I haven't, though I was just looking at them the other day when I installed a switch assembly (a future article) and noticed they were worn away in parts and very thin and brittle overall. If I find out a way to do heatshrinking or something without disassembling everything I'll remedy otherwise I guess I'll have to live with it. It was quite fiddly wiring up the new switch so I can only imagine what a pain it'd be to have to undo all the other wires as well down along the handlebars. I hate wiring! ;-)

Wondering if you have ever had to replace the black plastic sheaths around the wires that come out of the handlebar switch assemblies? In your photos yours look stock. The sheaths on mine are mostly non-existant at this point, just lots of pretty wires; and I am looking for an elegant fix, hopfully without disassembling the harness connector...

Well done! Thanks.

After reading about your adventure of dropping your keys down the sewer I was a little nervous watching this one-handed operation. Gloves would definitely make this harder.

Thanks for the reply. Blue sounds nice, but I guess I'll skip the optional bulbs and just go with stock; as I don't have the option to run without the main headlight on on my US model.

I'll look for your photo. And thanks again for making this blog. It's great.

I believe it's designed to be a parking light. Seems a lot of motorbikes and scooters have them. It certainly has no practical lighting application for driving. I replaced mine because it's there and I wanted it to work. It was simple enough: standing in front of your bike facing the headlight, reach up under the fairing, feel around for the bulb holder and yank it down. It's not a very sophisticated part, to say the least. The first time I did it, mine was *very* stuck and I had to use a pliers (gently), but now it comes out without much effort. The bulb cost about 50cents.

I've seen some guys put in halogen bulbs which are very bright indeed. They say the benefit is when you're in stop 'n' go traffic you don't run down the battery running your main headlight or blinding the driver stopped in front of you. I've also seen a couple with a blue tint which look very cool and eye-catching - for a split second it makes people think it's a police bike, but not so much you'd be trouble with the authorities.

I'll take a photo of it uninstalled this weekend.

I've been looking at that little bulb in front of the high beam, wondering what in the world it is for, and guessing it is the same you mention here. I have no documents on my r1150rt, and can't find any mention of this bulb anywhere except by you. Of course, I haven't gone to a BMW dealership to ask... I see it on the BMW parts fische, without expanation. So, what is it? Mine appears to be dead; doesn't seem to do anything at all.

I am really enjoying your blog! I just purchased a 2002 R1150RT with 113,500 on the clock, no records; and am just getting into the TLC this machine needs. It is in fairly good (maybe great) condition considering the miles. Your blog of your experience with this machine will be a fantastic resourse. Thanks very much!
